The First Air Conditioner, 20 Years On

Here is a pattern we see a lot in Narre Warren. The house went up in the late 80s or the 90s. Somewhere in the early 2000s, the owners added a split system or two, or a ducted cooling system. It has worked well ever since. And now it is making a new noise, or blowing warm, or tripping the power.

A system that age is not automatically finished, and a fair few deserve the repair. The catch is the refrigerant. Many units from that era use R22, which has been phased out and is now hard and costly to get. So a fault that means opening the refrigerant circuit, like a leak or a compressor failure, can turn a routine repair into a poor investment.

That is the conversation we have most often here: is this one worth fixing? We will check the label, find the fault, and give you a straight answer on cooling and heating alike, with the repair price and a replacement price side by side.

R22 Systems: Repair or Replace?

R22 was the standard refrigerant in home air conditioners for decades. It damages the ozone layer, so Australia phased it out, and new systems moved to R410A and then R32. Plenty of R22 units still run in Narre Warren homes, and while they keep working, there is no reason to rip them out.

The trouble starts when one needs refrigerant work. Recovered R22 is limited and priced accordingly, and a system low on gas is leaking somewhere, so topping it up without finding the leak just delays the next callout. Our rule of thumb is simple. Electrical faults, fan motors and sensors on an R22 unit can be worth fixing. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor usually is not. You will get both prices, and the choice is yours.

Narre Warren and the Surrounding City of Casey

Narre Warren grew in waves. The streets around Fountain Gate filled in through the 80s and 90s, Narre Warren South followed through the 90s and 2000s, and Narre Warren North kept its bigger, semi rural blocks. Each wave got the air conditioning of its day, which is why we see everything here, from an old window rattler to ducted reverse cycle and multi head split systems.

Not cooling like it used to? Read why an air conditioner stops cooling, or book a repair and we will find out. Thinking about a replacement, the split system installation calculator shows the price range first. Our Cranbourne and Rowville pages cover nearby, and Areas We Service has the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Tell If My Air Conditioner Uses R22?

Look at the label on the outdoor unit. It lists the refrigerant type, usually as R22, R410A or R32. If it says R22, the system is old, likely installed before about 2010, and any repair that involves refrigerant needs careful thought.

Sometimes, but R22 has been phased out under Australia’s ozone protection rules, so it is scarce and expensive. A leaking R22 system also leaks again unless the leak is found and fixed. in most cases the money is better spent on a modern system, and we will price both so you can see the difference.

Yes, and it is one of the most sensible uses for one. A single reverse cycle split sized for the room heats and cools it without touching the main house system. We check the power supply to the building first, since some outbuildings need a new circuit run from the switchboard.

We do. Larger homes on big blocks often suit ducted reverse cycle, and the main things we check are the distance from the switchboard, the roof space, and where the outdoor unit can sit away from bedrooms. Bring the house plan if you have one.
