Small Blocks, Old Houses, Tight Access
A North Melbourne job is rarely about which brand goes on the wall. It is about the block. Single fronted cottages sit wall to wall with no side path, the yard is a courtyard rather than a garden, and the way in for gear is often the laneway at the back rather than the front door.
That shapes the whole quote: where the condenser can sit without blocking the only outdoor space you have, how far the pipework has to travel from there to the room that needs cooling, and whether the neighbours end up listening to it. We work all of that out standing in the property, not from a price list. Both sides of the job, heating and cooling, are what we do.

Work We Do Around North Melbourne
Single fronted cottages, converted warehouses and walk up flats, on streets where access is the first thing to solve.
Multi Split Systems
Two to four rooms, one outdoor unit. That matters when the property has exactly one place to put it.
Split Systems
The straightforward fit for a cottage front room or an upstairs bedroom.
Reverse Cycle Ducted Systems
Where the roof space allows, ducted reverse cycle runs the whole home off one system.
Maintenance
A service before summer keeps the filters clear and finds the small faults while they are still small.
New Builds
Extensions and renovations, planned with the builder before the walls close up.
Upgrading and Replacing
Swapping an old unit for a quieter inverter model, usually in the same position.
No Side Access? Where the Outdoor Unit Goes
Four positions cover almost every North Melbourne property. The right one is usually obvious once someone is standing in the courtyard looking at the wall.
The Rear Courtyard
Level ground, anti vibration feet, clear of the back door. Cheapest run, easiest service.
The catch is obvious once you are standing in one. That courtyard is also where you sit in January, next to a unit throwing out heat.
A Bracket on the Back Wall
Gets it off the ground, keeps the courtyard usable, and shortens the run to an upstairs bedroom. Needs solid brickwork, and somewhere safe to stand when it needs a service.
The Roof of a Lean To
Out of sight. Out of the way.
Only where the structure takes the weight and someone can reach it without a scaffold.
A Balcony or Light Well
Often the only spot a converted warehouse or a flat has. Check airflow, check drainage, and check what the building allows on the outside before anyone promises you a date.
And on a multi head system only one of these has to work, which is why it keeps winning on the tightest blocks. See multi head split systems. Same problem, different street: Richmond terraces.

What Size Suits a Two Bedroom Terrace
Most North Melbourne homes need less capacity than people expect, because the rooms are small. The exception is the open plan extension at the back with glass facing west, which often needs more than the floor area suggests.
Undersizing is the expensive mistake. A unit that runs flat out all afternoon costs more to run and wears out sooner than the right size unit ticking over. We would rather talk you into the correct size than the bigger one. Start with the air conditioner size calculator, then we confirm it on site.
| Room | Rough size | Capacity | Installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom or study | Up to about 20 square metres | 2.5 kW | $1,900 to $2,500 |
| Front living room | About 20 to 30 square metres | 3.5 kW | $2,300 to $2,900 |
| Open plan living and kitchen | About 30 to 40 square metres | 5.0 kW | $2,700 to $3,500 |
| Whole cottage | Two to three rooms from one outdoor unit | Multi head | Quoted on the layout |
Indicative Melbourne ranges for a standard back to back install, reviewed July 2026, not a quote. A long pipe run from a rear courtyard to a front room, an upper storey, or a new circuit will add to it. Removing an old unit adds about $250. Price your own layout in the split system installation cost calculator.
Heating and Cooling Across North Melbourne and Kensington
North Melbourne is mostly single fronted Victorian cottages and terraces on narrow blocks, with bluestone laneways behind them, plus converted warehouses and walk up flats around Errol Street. Almost none of it has side access, so the first question on a quote is not which system, it is where the outdoor unit can go and how the pipework reaches it.
We install split system air conditioning and multi head split systems, and handle repairs and servicing on what is already there. Replacing an old gas heater? Check the Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts first. See the rest of the areas we service, including Brunswick next door.

Covers Straight, Old Unit Taken Away
On a narrow block the finish is in the detail. Pipework run where it is least visible, covers straight along the wall, the condenser sitting level and clear of the neighbour’s window, and the old unit taken with us. The images here show the kind of work we do, not a particular North Melbourne job.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where Does the Outdoor Unit Go With No Side Access?
Usually the rear courtyard on feet, a bracket on the back wall, or the roof of a lean to where it can be reached safely for servicing. Which one works depends on the pipe run back to the indoor unit and on what the neighbours look onto. We work that out on the first visit and show you the position before anything is drilled.
What Size Split System Suits a Two Bedroom Terrace?
A bedroom usually takes 2.5 kW and a front living room 3.5 to 5.0 kW, though ceiling height, west facing windows and insulation all move it. Undersizing is the common mistake, because the unit then runs flat out and costs more to run. Our size calculator gives you a starting figure before we visit.
What Areas Do You Cover Around North Melbourne?
North Melbourne, Kensington, Parkville, West Melbourne and Flemington, plus Carlton North and Brunswick a little further out. We cover metropolitan Melbourne, so ask even if your street is not listed.
Is a Heritage Overlay a Problem for an Outdoor Unit?
Not usually a problem, but worth checking. Parts of North Melbourne sit in a heritage overlay under the City of Melbourne, which can affect anything visible from the street. Putting the condenser out the back or below the parapet normally avoids the issue. Check with the council before you commit if your place is on a heritage listed street.
Do You Work in Warehouse Conversions and Older Flats?
Yes. Warehouse conversions often have exposed or concrete ceilings, so ducting has nowhere to run and wall mounted heads do the work. Walk up flats usually come down to where the outdoor unit can sit and what the owners corporation allows on the outside of the building. We check both before quoting.
