Multi-head suits homes where ducted isn’t practical: no usable roof space, heritage properties, apartments, or renovations where running ductwork would be disruptive. It also offers finer control – each room has its own full thermostat rather than sharing a zone – and you can often stage the investment room by room.

As a rule of thumb: if you want every room in a larger family home conditioned invisibly and the roof space allows it, ducted deserves a serious look. If you want up to five specific rooms controlled individually without touching the ceiling cavity, multi-head is usually the better fit.

One under-appreciated strength of multi-head systems is that the indoor units don’t all have to be the same type. On a single outdoor unit you can mix and match:

Hi-wall units – the familiar wall-mounted head and by far the most popular choice for bedrooms and living areas. Cost-effective and quick to install.

Bulkhead units – concealed inside a ceiling bulkhead with only a slim grille visible. A premium, near-invisible finish for renovations and space-restricted rooms.

Ceiling cassettes – recessed into the ceiling, delivering airflow in all directions. Ideal for larger open-plan living areas.

Floor-mounted consoles – installed low on the wall, perfect for rooms with limited wall space or older homes without ceiling access.

Matching the head type to each room is part of good system design – a hi-wall in each bedroom and a cassette over the open-plan living zone is a common Melbourne configuration.

How Many Heads – and What Size?

Sizing is where multi-head systems are most often got wrong, in both directions.
