Gas heaters: this one is a safety issue
If you have a gas ducted heater, servicing is not just about efficiency. A gas heater that is not maintained can develop a cracked heat exchanger and leak carbon monoxide into your home. It has no smell and no colour, and it is dangerous.
Energy Safe Victoria advises having gas heaters serviced and carbon monoxide tested by a licensed technician at least every two years. That test is a normal part of a proper gas heater service, and it is the single best reason not to skip one.
Warning signs to act on immediately: a yellow or lazy flame instead of a crisp blue one, soot or dark staining around the heater, a pilot light that keeps going out, or headaches and nausea that ease when you leave the house. If you see these, turn the heater off and book a technician.
