Two Systems, Both Getting On
A typical Berwick call goes something like this. A four bedroom house, built in the 80s or 90s. A gas ducted heater in the roof, and an evaporative cooler sitting on top of it. Both have done their job for a long time, and now one of them is playing up.
The temptation is to replace the one that broke. Sometimes that is right. But when both systems are around the same age, it is worth stepping back, because one reverse cycle ducted system can do the work of both: heating in winter and refrigerated cooling in summer, from one set of outlets, with the windows shut.
That will not suit every home or every budget, and an evaporative cooler in good order is still a cheap way to cool on a dry day. We will show you both paths on paper so you can choose.

What Is in Your Berwick Roof Space?
Start from what is already there. These four cover most homes we see.
An Evaporative Cooler, 15 Years Plus
Service it if it still runs well. If it is failing, price refrigerated cooling before replacing like with like.
Gas Ducted Heating, No Cooling
Add on cooling can sometimes share the ducts. Or replace both with one reverse cycle ducted system.
A Home Office Used All Day
A small split system in the study is cheaper than running the whole ducted system for one room.
A Heritage Home Near High Street
Ask the City of Casey about any overlay first. Then we plan where the outdoor unit can sit discreetly.
Heating and Cooling Work in Berwick
Most Berwick homes already have something. The job is usually deciding what to keep, what to replace, and in what order.
Multi Split Systems
One outdoor unit, several rooms. The usual answer when a terrace has no roof space for ducting.
Split Systems
One room at a time, a wall unit for the front bedroom or the living room.
Reverse Cycle Ducted Systems
Heating and cooling through ceiling vents, zoned, where the roof space allows it.
Maintenance
A service before the season turns, for ducted heaters, split systems and evaporative units.
New Builds
Pipework and ducting planned at frame stage for extensions and rebuilds.
Upgrading and Replacing
Old ducted heater out, reverse cycle in, so one system covers both seasons.
Keep the Evaporative Cooler, or Go Refrigerated?
There is no single right answer, which is why we would rather explain it than sell it. Evaporative cooling pulls hot air through wet pads and pushes cooler air through the house. It is cheap to run and works best on the hot, dry days Melbourne gets in a northerly. It needs the house open to let air through, and on a muggy day it barely helps.
Refrigerated ducted cooling works with the windows shut, copes with humidity, and if you choose reverse cycle, it heats the house too. It costs more to install and more to run on the hottest days. So the honest test is this: if your gas heater is also old, a reverse cycle system replacing both usually wins. If the heater is fine and you mostly need relief on dry scorchers, a serviced or replaced evaporative cooler may be all you need. The running cost calculator helps compare.

Exactly as written on Google. Neither customer says where they live, so we are not claiming these as Berwick jobs. They do show what a long working relationship with us looks like.

Berwick, the Old Village and the Estates to the South
Berwick has three faces. The old village around High Street, with some of the oldest buildings in the south east. The leafy established streets around it, full of larger family homes from the 1970s to the 90s. And the newer estates spreading south toward Clyde. We work across all three, from evaporative cooling and gas ducted heating to full reverse cycle ducted replacements.
Not sure which way to go? Our guide to evaporative versus refrigerated cooling lays out the trade offs, and the ducted vs split calculator puts numbers on them. For a breakdown, go straight to repairs. Nearby, we have a page for Cranbourne, and the rest are on Areas We Service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can We Add Cooling to Our Gas Ducted Heating?
Sometimes. An add on refrigerated cooling unit can share the existing ducts with the gas heater, so one set of outlets does both jobs. It only works if the ducts are big enough and in good condition, and if the heater has life left in it. If the heater is near the end, a single reverse cycle ducted system that heats and cools is often the better buy.
Is Evaporative Cooling Still Worth Keeping?
On a hot dry day it works well and costs little to run. It struggles when the air is humid, it needs a window or door open to work, and it does nothing in winter. If yours is running well, a service keeps it going. If it is old and tired, compare it with refrigerated cooling before you replace like with like.
Do We Need Council Approval for an Outdoor Unit on a Heritage Home?
Possibly. Some properties in and around the old Berwick village sit under a heritage overlay, which can control what goes on the front or sides of the house. The City of Casey can tell you what applies to your address. We will help find a spot for the outdoor unit that keeps it out of sight from the street either way.
How Long Do Ducted Systems and Evaporative Coolers Last?
Our repair or replace calculator uses about 15 years for ducted reverse cycle and about 18 for gas ducted heaters and evaporative coolers. Good servicing stretches that, and a hard life shortens it. If both systems in your home are past those ages, it is worth pricing a single replacement before either one fails.
